The single largest source of man-made oil pollution in the oceans is oily waste spills from ships, While oil spills occurs by large industrial accidents or improper practices, oil leak in the pipeline, washing and cleaning of tanks and the more serious are the attacks of terrorist groups especially in Colombia. which consequences does this bad practice of the oil industry?. These oil spills pollute and degrade the soil, vegetation, species of marine and terrestrial animals, crops, drinking water, rivers and seas, also polluting the air. Oil spills are filtered into the groundwater and are directed to the rivers to finally result in the sea, contaminating large amounts of water, this has affected the life present in these environments. How do you clean up an oil spill?
If the spill is the land, you should be mechanically removed such as to burn contaminated soil in situ, using absorbent or foams and bioremediation, but if seawater is contaminated first thing you should do is to enclose the spill in a particular place with mechanical barriers that absorb or separate oil from water. As then remains oil droplets in water, then to use dispersants to break up the oil and speed its natural biodegradation. Dispersants act by reducing the surface tension that stops oil and water from mixing. Natural bacteria can digest the hydrocarbons and convert them to carbon dioxide and water. This is called biodegradation, and is a natural process that can clean water and sediment after an oil spill. The natural process can be speeded up by the addition of fertilizing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, which stimulate growth of the microorganisms.
In conclusión, the most important is to remove contaminated water from oil to protect human health and wildlife as fast as posible and It is important to have contingency plans in order to deploy personnel and equipment pollution control efficiently.
